What’s behind the rise of moscato? It hasn’t hurt that the wine has been embraced by the hip-hop community, with endorsements from the likes of Kayne West, Drake and Lil’ Kim, or that it boasts the popular #Moscato hashtag on Twitter. But while the varietal has caught the attention of the younger set, it’s not just Millennials fueling moscato’s growth of 200% since 2009.
First Sip: Thinking Outside the Margarita Glass

Although its share of total has slipped a bit in recent years, the Margarita remains the most popular on-premise mixed drink. It’s not hard to see why: The festive classic is a balanced drink with a pleasing sweet/sour taste profile, plus a strong kick. It also allows for numerous flavor variations and makes a great frozen drink-perfect for summer, vacation and celebration. 2 oz. Jack Daniels
2 oz. Apple juice
4 dashes Angostura Bitters
½ oz. Ginger syrup
4 Basil leaves
Muddle the basil leaves and ginger syrup, then shake with all other ingredients and pour over ice.
The mixologists at La Bottega in The Maritime Hotel in New York created this Italian-themed mint julep to honor 2013 Kentucky Derby favorite Verrazano. (La Mela means apple in Italian–a horse’s favorite snack!)
Vinegars Give New York City Cocktails a New Kick
Hangar One vodka has revealed its new apothecary-style bottle with embossed measurements and a stopper cap that brings to mind a measuring beaker. The design was inspired by the brand’s artisanal process, including distillation in a WWII aircraft hangar. The 80-proof vodka is available for a suggested retail price of $29.99 for a 750-ml. bottle.
Newcastle has announced the release of Newcastle Bombshell, the brand’s newest limited edition ale. The English-style blonde pale ale has a balanced bittersweet taste and caramel sweetness, according to the company. Bombshell is available in 6-packs and 12-packs with 12-oz. bottles.
I received a small coffin in the mail last week. I opened the box upside down so I didn’t see what the coffin was all about at first. I initially wondered if I’d annoyed someone, and he or she was sending a strong message. Or maybe it was a clever Cinco de Mayo promotion, though it was more akin to Dia de los Muertos.
