SweetWater Hash Session IPA, Hash Brown

08/11/2016

by: Kyle Swartz

SweetWater Brewing Company of Atlanta, Georgia, has announced the release two beers: Hash Session IPA, Hash Brown. Both are available now in variety packs and will hit shelves in individual packs later in August.

Hash Session IPA debuted as a spring seasonal in 2016. Due to its popularity, SweetWater is bringing Hash Session IPA back as their newest year-round brew.  4.2% ABV, 55 IBUs. With malts of Maris Otter, Pilsner, Wheat, and Midnight Wheat, and hops of Bravo, and Amarillo Hop Hash. The dry hops are Ahtanum, El Dorado, and Crystal.

Available in: 6-pack 12-oz. bottles, 15-pack of 12-oz. cans, carton 12-oz. bottles, in Fall Variety Packs, and on draft

Hash Brown, an infused India Brown Ale, debuted as SweetWater’s fall seasonal in 2015. Resiny, citrusy hops spice up the rich chocolate and caramel notes from the malt mix, the company says. The malt bill is 2-Row, Wheat, Pale Chocolate, Cara-Brown, and Midnight Wheat, with the hops Mandarina Bavaria, Bravo, Hop Hash, Simcoe, Centennial.  6.2% ABV, 60 IBUs.

Available August through October 2016 in: 6-pack 12-oz. bottles, case 12-oz. bottles, 12-oz. cans in Fall Variety Pack only, and on draft

SweetWater pioneered the usage of hop hash, the company says. SweetWater’s brewers work with their hop suppliers to dig deep into the pelletizers, scrape them clean, and gather bricks of the leftover pure hop lupulin. They are harvesting a concentrated form of hop resin, also known as hash.

SweetWater’s head brewer Nick Nock explains: “Hop hash is the leftover resin that escaped from the hop cones going through the pelletizer, which is all too often ignored and left unused. We’ve created some killer brew recipes using this sticky and potent ingredient; it’s been a blast to experiment with, and delivers the biggest hit of hop flavor possible.”
