No-frills airline Spirit Airlines announced June 5 that it is selling wine by the can. In a partnership with the Friends Just Wine brand, Spirit will sell cans of white or strawberry moscato for $7 each or $12 for two cans.
That won’t be Spirit’s only wine offering, though. The airline will continue to sell Sutter Home’s more traditional mini-bottles of wine. According to reports, Spirit’s can of wine is larger — 250 milliliters to the bottle’s 187 — but less potent. The canned wine is 6% alcohol by volume vs. 13% for Sutter Home.
While some customers may be skeptical about the quality of wine that’s offered in a can, Spirit isn’t concerned. The cans are easier to stack and store on airplanes with limited storage space; they also weigh less, which helps the airline are save on fuel.
