National IPA Day falls on Aug. 3, and a great way to celebrate is to hoist an India pale ale paired with a craft burger. Black Tap Craft Burgers and Beer, with locations in Anaheim, CA; Las Vegas; Nashville; and two in New York, is a good place to start: The name refers to those black tap handles found in craft beer bars.
Not sure which IPA to pair with which type of burger? Black Tap’s beverage director Christian Orlando shares some picks for three different IPAs and the burgers to enjoy with them.
Threes’s Brewing, All or Nothing West Coast IPA, Brooklyn NY (6.8% ABV)
Why it’s great: This is our newest addition to the Black Tap lineup, and it could be pound for pound one of the best West Coast IPAs made on the East Coast.
Tasting notes: Hoppy with the perfect amount of bitterness that drinks almost like a Pilsner. If you prefer West Coast IPAs over New England IPAs, look no further.
Pairing: A classic All-American burger with American cheese, lettuce, tomato and special sauce.
Bronx Brewery, Smile My Guy aka STOOP Session IPA, Bronx NY (5% ABV)
Why it’s great: I really think Bronx Brewery out did themselves with this Juicy IPA. You can find this beer around any random beer package store in the state of New York, but can only find it on tap at our NYC Black Tap locations under the alias Stoop Session IPA.
We loved this beer so much that we asked Bronx Brewery to Keg this beer exclusively for us. The absolute perfect approachable Juicy IPA is great as an introductory beer for this category.
Also, it is a great beer for someone drinking outside their comfort zone. Coming in at 5% ABV, we felt Stoop Session was the perfect name.
Tasting notes: Brewed with fresh lemon peels and a blend of cascade, centennial, comet and Mandarina Bavaria hops; this beer is great for day drinking and long hangs.
Pairing: Our spicy Mexico City burger with pepper jack cheese, crispy onion ring, pickled jalapenos and chipotle mayo.
Bearded Iris Brewing, Homestyle IPA, Nashville (6% ABV)
Why it’s great: Served at our new Nashville location, this beer is a local hometown favorite and personally one of mine as well. I picked this beer up in Grand Central to enjoy as my post-work train commute home beverage. Super crushable, and very balanced.
Tasting notes: Notes of cereal, berries and grapefruit really make this an enjoyable single hopped/hazy IPA.
Pairing: Peri Peri Turkey Burger with white American cheese, corn salsa, watercress, avocado jalapeno crema and spicy peri peri sauce.
