Cheers to the Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this month. Since its inception in 1949, the bar has been beloved by locals and tourists; it’s also a hot spot during the annual Tales of The Cocktail industry convention.
The circus-themed revolving bar, which has 25 hand-painted chairs, circumnavigates at one revolution every 15 minutes. How? The bar turns on 2,000 large steel rollers, pulled by a chain powered by a one-quarter horsepower motor.
A renovation in 1992 added an authentic carousel top to the bar. The hotel also revamped and expanded the bar and lounge in 2011 to include more lighting under the carousel top and a new pewter bar surface.
Celebrities such as Liberace, William Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, Quentin Tarantino, Michael Jordan and Gregg Allman have been spotted at the Carousel Bar over the years. The only merry-go-round you need to be 21 to ride is also home to the famous Vieux Carre cocktail and the lesser-known, rum-based Goody, which were first concocted by Carousel bartenders.
