Trish Gavin and the Negroni Sbagliato

06/30/2020

by: Melissa Dowling

Negroni Sbagliato

Trish Gavin is beverage director at Lat14 Asian Eatery and Lemon Grass in the Minneapolis metropolitan area.

I wanted a slow sipper as the thermometer climbs. Something refreshing but not one that goes down too fast, so my go-to has become the Negroni Sbagliato. I wanted to give it a summer vibe, so I added Bittercube cherrybark vanilla bitters and Five Watt (a local Minneapolis brand) raspberry bitters.

Sbagliato means “messed up” or “wrong” in Italian. My best guess is someone grabbed the wrong bottle once upon a time and poured sparkling wine into a Negroni. As the artist Bob Ross would say, it was a happy accident.

Negroni Sbagliato
1 ½ oz. Crooked Water Sundog gin
1 oz. Cocchi di Torino sweet vermouth
½ oz. Tattersall bitter orange liqueur
3 oz. Sparkling wine
2 dashes Cherrybark vanilla bitters
3 dashes Five Watt raspberry bitters.

Combine gin, vermouth and liqueur in a mixing glass with ice and stir. Pour into glass over new ice and add sparkling wine (I prefer cava). Add bitters and garnish with strawberry and/or orange peel.
