Just in time for National Rum Day, celebrated bartender-turned-distiller Todd Thrasher has unveiled his flagship spirit, Thrasher’s Green Spiced Rum. The botanical-based blend is made to impart flavors reminiscent of English gin—herbaceous, floral, and aromatic with hints of green citrus.
The 80-proof, molasses-fermented spirit is a mixing rum, intended to enhance cocktails such as Thrasher’s signature Rum & Tonic, a favorite sipper of the founder from his explorative days scuba diving throughout the South Pacific. Thrasher developed the recipe through experimentation using herbs grown in his backyard.
He now grows the herbs used in the distilling process, which include thrasher lemon verbena, lemongrass, lemon balm, mint and green cardamom, on the large rooftop garden of the Potomac Distilling Co. Situated on Washington DC’s District Wharf,
Potomac Distilling offers a three-story urban, waterfront distillery producing three styles of Thrasher’s Rum and housing the Polynesian-style cocktail haven, Tiki TNT.
In celebration of National Rum Day on Aug. 16, Thrasher is serving up complimentary tastings of Thrasher’s Rum from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Tiki TNT. All-day Rum Day food and drink specials include rum-glazed ribs, rum buns and more.
