Dogfish Head Olde School Barleywine

01/03/2017

by: Kyle Swartz

Dogfish Head is kicking off the New Year with a throwback release of one of its most popular seasonal beers, the company says. Olde School Barleywine will be reintroduced starting January 3, 2017. It will be available in all 31 states that sell Dogfish Head.

Originally introduced in 2002, Olde School is is a barleywine with a sweet, velvety, complex flavor profile, the company says.

“Our approach was to do a new world take on traditional English barleywine,” says Dogfish Head president and founder, Sam Calagione, in a press release. “American style barleywines tend to be more hop-forward while, in comparison, English barleywines are malt-forward and develop their fruity attributes from the esters.”

Clocking in at about 15% ABV (with 85 IBUs), this barleywine is an ideal candidate for cellaring. Over time, the beer dries out, which allows the pit fruit flavors to come forward and the hops to recede into the background. As it matures, Olde School develops oxidative characteristics, including honey and toffee flavors and aromas, and lessened bitterness.

The suggested retail price is $76.50 per case and $12.75 per four-pack.
