Anheuser-Busch Discontinues Oculto, Mixxtails, Other New Beers

11/17/2016

by: Kyle Swartz

Like first-season sitcoms that failed to catch on, a number of new beers from Anheuser-Busch that did not generate an audience will be pulled.

This according to an article this week from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The news story reports that AB will halt production of Octulto, Mixxtails, Budweiser Black Crown, Busch Signature, Michelob Ultra Light Cider, Beck’s Dark and Beck’s Sapphire.

All the brands will end next spring. Wholesalers have reportedly been notified of the discontinuation.

Oculto is a tequila-flavored beer that was launched last year in an attempt to gain market share among Millennials. Mixxtails are cocktail-inspired brews that are 8% ABV and come in the flavors Long Island, Firewalker and Hurricane.

In an email to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, an AB spokesperson wrote, “Anheuser-Busch is consistently looking for ways to optimize our portfolio and deliver the right brands at the right time . . . As part of that continual evaluation, we’ve decided to discontinue or re-align a selection of low-volume brands and flavor variants this spring. This proactive approach to will allow us to prioritize our core offerings and make room for exciting new products.”

Just great, Anheuser-Busch takes away the one product that I liked. Their management must have the same business model as General Motors, which is trying desperately to put themselves out of business.

Could not agree more…we were able to purchase only 3 cases in the last year due to poor distribution in NJ. In fact, a local liquor store claimed it was exclusively a fall beer. Seriously, tequila is a fall liquor???? Maybe AB should have done a better job with distribution and promotion…Landshark is everywhere and a tequila infused beer should capture that same market. Maybe Jimmy Buffett should use Oculto as a promotional brand too!!

Agree!!! I loved this beer but never saw one advertisement on tv, radio or social media!! There is absolutely no reason it shouldn’t be outselling Landshark! It is the best beer I’ve ever tasted and if more people had tried it, there is no way it would have been discontinued. This is 100 percent a failure due to poor advertising and marketing.

As many here have expressed, Oculto should be brought back. I am not a fan of anything AB produces being a craft beer drinker. However, they hit it perfectly in Oculto. I can talk people into trying it when they do not like the taste of beer, it is a start. AB needs to remember, they cannot please everyone. Also, negative posts to Oculto can be bought. Just sayin’

However, he couldn’t find it, so I checked and discovered this page announcing that it had been discontinued. Please bring it back. Only AB product he has every liked. It was one of his favorites. You did not give this beer enough time to establish a market!

Am so disgusted with AB for taking Occulto off the market. We found the beer in one out-of-the-way small grocery store last January and have been drinking it ever since. While we drink beer, there is no other AB product that we purchase. There was never any advertising for this beer, and yet everyone we shared it with loved it as much as we do. Saved our final 2 bottles for viewing during the eclipse. Sure hope AB gets wise and brings it back.

Occulto was a refreshing and tasty drink. It’d be nice if they’d have put more effort into advertising instead of discontinuing. I mean, everyone knows what beer it is if you say “stay thirsty my friends”. That’s good advertising!

I’ve been searching for Oculto for months and months. Finally searched for it and discovered it’s been pulled! I liked it, I’ve turned friends and family onto it. Maybe if InBev had advertised and kept more in stock at my local stores, it would have taken off. This was a bad move. I have read reviews by (so called) experts, they are wrong! It was refreshing, especially when working in the garden or lawn. Thanks for nothing Anhauser Bush. I think I’ll begin brewing at home and see if I can come up with a palatable facsimile. Thanks for motivating me into a new hobby which I’ve always been interested in.

Perhaps ab bought occulto to avoid competition for corona. This beer costs a lot more to produce also. I can think of a hundred kick ass marketing and advertising campaigns to justify this beer’s production and profit. After addicting everyone to their mundane Everyman weasel piss, why would anyone expect these pompous asses to be progressive. Oh, don’t miss the scintillating action on their new cable show.!!!
