Glenelly South African Wines

09/09/2016

by: Kyle Swartz

The Cape Classics import Glenelly Estate has debuted new label designs for their latest release of vintages.

Glenelly Estate is located on the southern slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, Soutn Africa. Soils are predominantly decomposed granite with a deep clay base. Most of the vineyards are planted on east-facing slopes. This is unusual in Stellenbosch, the company says, and gives the benefit of exposure to the more gentle morning sun rather than the harsh afternoon sun. This allows for slower, more even ripening.

postglenelly_estatereservechardonnay_nvThe Glenelly Estate Reserve 2011 is 40% Shiraz, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Glenelly Estate Reserve is the estate’s signature red blend. It exhibits fine-grained tannins that are firm yet elegant, the company reports. The rich, savory character of Shiraz is enhanced by lush, concentrated flavors of blackberry, cherry and cassis, supported by floral tones and notes of tobacco and spice. 14% ABV. SRP: $27.99 per 750-ml. bottle.

The nose of the Glenelly Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2014 exhibits citrus, lime zest and flint, the company says, with hints of apple with vanilla and butterscotch. The creamy texture is underpinned with a beautiful minerality, fresh citrus notes and hints of toasted almond and vanilla. 12.5% ABV. SRP: $27.99.

The Glenelly Glass Collection Unoaked Chardonnay 2015 has a bright color with a slight green hue. The wine has aromas of citrus, lime zest and melon, the company reports. On the palate there is a round texture with length and a fruit finish. Inspired by antique glasses from May de Lencquesaing’s private collection, Glenelly’s Glass Collection “celebrates the parallels between the art of making wine and the art of making glass,” the company says. 13.5% ABV. SRP: $19.99 per 750-ml. bottle.

The Glenelly Glass Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 has a “classic Bordeaux profile,” the company says. It has flavors of black currant, cherry, and dark chocolate, with spice and floral notes. 14.5% ABV. SRP: $19.99.
