A steady stream of new product introductions always seems to flow in the beverage alcohol business, but there has been a shift in what type of spirits are coming to market.
For instance, according to data compiled by the Beverage Information and Insights Group (the research unit of Cheers’ parent company), Scotch product introductions surged from 15 in 2012 to 23 in 2013 to 46 in 2014, beating the 41 new American whiskey product launched last year.
And while vodka remains the clear winner with the largest (17.5%) share, product introductions in the category tumbled from 108 in 2013 to 63 last year.
Meanwhile, rum boosted its share from 6.3% the previous two years to 10.2% in 2014, with 37 new products launched.
