The Caribe Hilton (where Ramon “Monchito” Marrero created the Pina Colada in 1954) is celebrating the famous drink’s anniversary for two months this year with a special festival, which includes mixology classes, a special menu at restaurants and a cocktail party. From the press release:
On Aug. 15 Caribe Hilton is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Piña Colada and its place in history as the island resort where the popular, official drink of Puerto Rico was born. To celebrate the occasion, this Puerto Rico resort is welcoming guests with a special Piña Colada inspired offer.
For 60 days, from Aug. 15 to Oct. 15 travelers will have a chance to reserve the Piña Colada Fest Package starting at US$60* per person, including accommodation, daily buffet breakfast for two and two welcome piña coladas. The offer will be available for stays through Dec. 19.
In the spirit of the celebrations, Caribe Hilton is also planning an array of other activities for guests to enjoy throughout the year, including mixology classes at Oasis Bar; sweepstakes; a special menu at Oasis Bar with several new twists on the original Piña Colada; and a Piña Colada cocktail party at Oasis Bar on Aug. 15 which will kick off the festivities.
The Piña Colada was originally created at Caribe Hilton in 1954 by Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, during his days as a bartender at the resort. After three months of experimentation, Monchito finally settled on the piña colada mixture he felt captured the true flavor of Puerto Rico. He continued to serve the drink at Caribe Hilton for 35 years until his retirement in 1989, and left quite the legacy, as in 1978 Puerto Rico named the Piña Colada its official national drink.
Caribe Hilton’s famed Original Piña Colada recipe is a great way to get a taste of Puerto Rico.
