Sidney Frank Importing Co. has debuted Gekkeikan’s Suzaku premium sake, the first Junmai Ginjo-Shu or “Ginjo” expression in Gekkeikan’s U.S. sake portfolio. [Suzaku means “guardian of the South,” referring to the mythological Japanese name for the Vermillion bird.] Suzaku combines fresh spring water, yeast, koji and fine rice, which is then fermented at a low temperature. The result, according to the company, is a fruity aroma with notes of pear, honeydew and pineapple. The taste is smooth with a creamy body leading to a light fruit finish. It complements a range of foods, and should be consumed slightly chilled or at room temperature. Suzaku is available nationwide with a suggested retail price of $24.99 for a 720 ml bottle.
