Cheers Magazine Announces Its 2009 Cheers Beverage Scholarship Winners
Norwalk, Conn. (June 23, 2009) – Cheers, the beverage magazine for full-service restaurants and bars, recently announced its Cheers Beverage Scholarship winners from the Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. For the past four years, Cheers, a division of the Beverage Information Group, has given a scholarship to outstanding students at Johnson & Wales’ College of Culinary Arts who are enrolled in the college’s “Beverage Concentration.” This year’s winners, Rachel Neitzke of Carson City, Nev., Dustin Middleton of Schenectady, N.Y., and Jillian Schaffer of Concord, N.H. Each received their scholarships during an awards presentation in May at the College of Culinary Arts. The $2,500 scholarship (split three ways) is awarded to students on the basis of merit and faculty recommendations.
Each winner is headed on a very different career path within the beverage industry. Rachel plans to use her beverage training to better pair wine with her culinary creations; Dustin wants to become a winemaker in Napa, Calif. after graduation; and Jillian Schaffer hopes to use her beverage knowledge when she opens her own restaurant.
Johnson & Wales’ beverage program is the largest concentration in the university’s hospitality college with almost 200 students, according to Ed Korry, Johnson & Wales’ department chair of beverage and dining services. Students at the Providence, R.I., campus can choose to earn the optional beverage concentration within their bachelor’s degree program.
